The Faithful Orion

By sloondabloon

Have you heard of the Orion ??? It is a constellation .. It is also called The Hunter

I remember when I first studied about the different constellations in school … I was quite inquisitive .. and that night I set out to explore the sky …

I studied the constellations one by one .. and went on exploring the sky … but couldn’t find any of them … I didn’t lose hope .. I went on exploring the diamonds in the sky with my tiny eyes ….

Suddenly I found something remarkable !!! …. 3 stars in a row …. that was the belt of the hunter !!!

Wow .. I had found the Orion .. I was so excited … and ran up to my mother… “Mummy mummy .. I have spotted the Orion” … I dragged her up to the terrace and showed her … She smiled at me … An encouraging one :) … I was so proud .. and I felt as if I had made a discovery…

I read there were different seasons for viewing constellations and tried to console myself that that was why I could not spot any other constellation that day …

As each day passed by I would again … search for the constellations .. but I would only find my dear Orion blinking at me … That made me happy …

Whatever season it was .. I would find the faithful Orion unlike the other constellations that needed seasons/regions to pop out … :)

Well yes .. it would be hard to spot him on a cloudy day .. but that is not his fault . It’s because those dirty clouds cover him up :(

I don’t like referring to him as the Hunter … that’s harsh … and reminds me of a fierce man .. ready to attack .. The Orion … is suitable .. that gives me the picture of those beautiful blinking diamonds in the sky..

Every time I look at the sky in the night .. The first thing I look for is the Orion … To this day … I haven’t forgotten him … And you know what .. Now I don’t remember any other constellation that I studied in school :-p heeeheeeheeehe

For your information , this is what the Orion looks like on a clear night sky : (P. S. You won’t see those lines joining the stars .. heehhehehee )

The Orion

Are you wondering why it is called the hunter ? Check this out …

The Hunter

What you spot easily is the dress of the hunter .. If you are trying to identify the Orion, the first thing you should try to spot is the belt .. the 3 stars in a row .. It’s easy .. try it out ..

I too had found him when I was in school :-) There was a publication called EUREKA by kerala sastra sahitya parishat which used to good articles on solar system and generally on every topic. Me, My mommy and Daddy used to go to terrace and sit there for a few hours in the evenings. We used to sea the bats flying in a particulur direction (Mommy used to say that they travel with the help of a peculiar sound they make to find obstacles in the way), And I used to bring my EUREKA and try to find the constellations.

Now after reading ur post, I remembered that it was the belt that we notice first :-) And as u said orion is the only constellation I remember now. :-(

I saw clear night sky and moon on my recent kannur trip. There was so much light that we could even read a book in the cool moonlight.

    light pollution. Bloody light pollution.

And we used to look at them as well in the terrace of our buildings, lying on top of water tanks, in between sessions of peeping at the other building windows, trying to draw attention of future girlfriends!

Another jawdropping object is the Orion Nebula which is located below the middle star of Orions belt, it is also referred to as M42.
This is where stars are born, some larger than the sun but most are not.
It produces some say 3 per year or equally 1 in mass of our sun.

The upper right star known as Betelgeuse, is the 11th brightest star in our sky. This star is 14,000 times brighter than our sun, its mass is that of 20 times that of our sun, and its volume is 160 million times larger than our sun, and if it were in the place of our sun would consume earth, mars and sometimes jupitor.

I too love these stars, and I was going name my son that but my husband didn’t like it so instead I named him JACOB ORION ok so it was not the first name but I did get it in there. LOL. Now when I look at it I remember Orion the Constellation and my son.
